Missing Media
A self-written and designed publication exploring how digital platforms shape the visibility of Latin American cinema. Structured like a screenplay, it blends personal reflection, academic research, and visual storytelling.
"Missing Media" is a personal and research-driven publication that examines the global underrepresentation of Latin American cinema, particularly in the context of digital platforms and communication. Motivated by my own love for film and cultural roots in Latin America, the project began with a simple yet persistent question: why are Latin American films—despite their rich storytelling and cultural relevance—so often overlooked in international markets?
Told through the structure of a screenplay, the piece merges narrative storytelling with visual design, academic research, and first-person reflection. Each "act" explores a different facet of the issue, from government funding and cultural translation to streaming algorithms and the influence of global film festivals. By studying the rise of South Korean cinema and the role platforms like Netflix have played in popularizing foreign content, the publication draws parallels and proposes possibilities for Latin American film industries.
Rather than presenting findings through a traditional essay format, I chose a screenplay layout to echo the cinematic theme and invite the reader into a more immersive, creative experience. The result is a hybrid form—part essay, part personal essay, part film—that reflects the complexity of the topic and the potential of design to communicate across disciplines.
