Silent Echoes
A publication that explores the Guatemalan Civil War and genocide—one of the most silenced chapters in Latin American history. Through design, research, and photography, Silent Echoes seeks to preserve memory and provoke reflection.
Shedding Light on
a Silenced PastSilent Echoes is a self-initiated publication that examines the Guatemalan genocide—systematic violence against Indigenous Mayan communities during the country’s 36-year civil war. Despite its scale, the atrocity remains largely unknown beyond Central America. This project blends historical research with visual storytelling to create a space for remembrance and cultural acknowledgment. By juxtaposing archival imagery with photographs of handmade Guatemalan crafts, it honors both the suffering and the resilience of Indigenous people.
A Quiet Elegance
for
a Haunting HistoryI wanted the publication to feel poignant, serious, and elegant, this guided the choice of a black background and a refined serif typeface. The recurring use of tecolote owl figures, crafted by Indigenous Guatemalan artisans, serves as a symbolic visual thread throughout the book. These owls embody a quiet presence, adding emotional depth while representing the spirit and endurance of the Mayan communities. The overall layout balances negative space, image sequencing, and typographic restraint to echo the solemn tone of the subject matter.
