Introducing Privacy in Student Living Spaces

A collaborative project in which my partner and I aimed to solve the issue of lack of private spaces in FIT’s Kaufman Hall by introducing free, individual pods for students to use.

Kaufman Hall is one of FIT’s (Fashion Institute of New York) student residence halls. As is the case with many university student dorms in the U.S., students often have to share a room and facilities, leading to a lack of private spaces for students.

My partner and I were tasked with coming up with a solution to this problem that was inspired by the ideas and language of “design fiction.”

We created a proposal for a solution to this problem, called DormSolitude. This would repurpose the unused 15th floor of Kaufman Hall by turning it into a floor full of individual pods for students to use free of charge. DormSolitude introduces two types of pods for students to use: WorkPods, for students looking for a space to get work done, and PersonalPods, for students simply wanting a quiet space for themselves.

The project involved creating the DormSolitude branding, waysigninging, mobile app design, and pod designs.
